Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are a trio of deities worshipped at the temple. In Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition, Balaram is the elder brother, Jagannath is the younger brother and Subhadra is the youngest sister. Subhadra, the sister, is depicted in the center and Krishna and Balaram are shown on the left and right side of Subhadra in the temple. They are closely associated with the Hindu festival, Ratha Yatra, held at Puri in the state of Odisha, India. It is the oldest Ratha Yatra taking place in India and the World, whose description can be found in Brahma Purana. Puri is known as Purushottam Kshetra, which is one of the four most sacred places in India for the Hindus. The famous festival Ratha Yatra, or chariot festival, which occurs yearly in June or July. During this festival, the three deities are taken from the temple and placed in large chariots which are then drawn along Grand Road by the devotees to the Gundicha Temple where they spend nine days. The deities are brought back to main temple and this return procession is called as “Bahuda Yatra”.
