Description:

The “Tribal Farmer Couple in Terracotta Art Form” contains a tribal farmer couple figurine in the box. The term ‘Tribal’ or ‘Tribe’ is used for the very old inhabitants of a nation often referred as native people, Adivasi, Janajati etc. They don’t practice any specific religion nor practice any caste system. Languages used by the Tribals are not scripted and just used for verbal communication. Though their professions are agriculture, hunting, planting, fishing, home crafts etc. but agriculture is main profession and women also contribute significantly in all these professions to their male counterpart. This figurine is depiction of those hard-working tribal farmer couple where the man is standing with a spade and woman with a basket.

Mother Nature has bestowed us with many precious blessings and Terracotta is one amongst those. The term “Terracotta” has been derived from a Latin phrase “Terra cocta” which means “baked earth”. In simple terms, Terracotta is nothing but clay-based earthenware. This is one of the ancient art forms which is a manifestation of human imagination and became reality with the invention of the potter’s wheel, recognized as the first machine invented to use the power of motion for productive use. As per Hindu Mythology, foundation of Terracotta is the outcome of integration of five elements encompassing air, ether, water, earth and fire.

The origin of Terracotta goes back to the era of Indus Valley Civilization to ancient Mesopotamia, from Greek and Roman civilization to Chinese history, everywhere traces of Terracotta sculptures, products can be found. Like other parts of India, there is a deep and glorious story of Terracotta in Bengal. Bengali artisans have not only excelled in the art but perfected with their craftsmanship. Though it is believed that terracotta art and craft came to Bengal during the Mauryan Age (324-187 BC), though there are some evidences of pre-Mauryan sculptures also are as found in Harinarayanpur and Pandu Rajar Dhibi in contemporary undivided Bengal. Actually, the terracotta craft in Bengal started flourishing in the 16th century, when the Bengali culture came in influence of the Vaisnava movement, led by Sri Chaitanya. Interestingly, the Malla rulers of Bankura took initiative to popularize both the Vaisnava sect and the new kind of terracotta art, the Krishna sect on the beautiful temples built by them and these marvellous historical relics can be found in different districts of Bengal specially Bishnupur of Bankura, Kalna or Bardhaman, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Hoogly etc.

The major steps in making pottery involves collecting and blending two or more types of refined clay found in river bed, pits etc. Then after the beautiful shapes, designs and patterns are crafted by the artisans with their amazing traditional age-old skill. After drying the figurines, the artworks are baked in a kiln at a temperature range of 700-1000 °C and during this process, the iron reacts with oxygen which results in a fired body or reddish colour.

In Bengal, Terracotta sculptures are Folk themed, which is very popular and globally accepted but also widely spread across household kitchen wares like cooking utensils, coffee mugs, kulhads, pots and vases, wall hanging, decorative showpieces, toys, dolls etc. Though due to urbanization it has started losing its glory but with rising global problems, people have started realizing the importance of being organic and the benefits of using Terracotta. With the re-engineered and new innovations brought into Terracotta art, People have embraced and accepted it like never before.
