Description

Description:

Wooden Nataraja Figurine – “Lord Shiva as Cosmic Dancer” contains a 19 inches tall Lord Shiva Sculpture in the box. The word Nataraja is a Tamil term where Nata means Act, Drama, Dance etc. and Raja meaning Lord or King. Therefore, the meaning of Nataraja is Lord of dance or King of dance. The sculpture is symbolic of Shiva as the “Lord of Dance”. In this cosmic dancer form of Lord Shiva, he is shown with four arms and surrounded by a ring of flames called the Prabha Mandala, standing on a lotus pedestal and balancing / trampling on a dwarf figure (Apasmara or Muyalaka means forgetfulness, heedlessness) who symbolizes human ignorance. Lord Shiva is holding Agni (fire) in a vessel or in his palm of the left back hand while the the front left hand is spread across his chest in the gajahasta (elephant-trunk) or dandahasta (stick hand) mudra pose, with wrist limp and fingers pointed downward toward the uplifted left foot, On the back right hand Lord is holding a musical instrument, the damaru (hourglass-shaped drum) or Udukai; while the front right hand wrapped with a snake is in the abhaya mudra pose (the “fear-not” gesture) where Shiva has held the palm outward with fingers pointing upwards.

In this energetic dance form, Shiva’s whirling hair is dispersed in different directions with a crescent moon, skull, Ganga flowing from the top. The most common representation of Nataraja, is called the bhujungatrasa, trembling like snake. This dance is said to have been performed in Chidambaram Temple in South India. Different moves of Shiva’s dance represent five activities (panchakritya): creation (symbolized by the drum), protection (by the “fear-not” pose of the hand), destruction (by the fire), embodiment (by the foot planted on the ground), and release (by the foot held aloft). In this sculpture, Shiva’s cosmic dance on doomsday represents the dissolution of the universe at the end of an aeon. A log of wood is hand curved and gala polished to bring out such an amazing wooden sculpture of Lord Shiva in the form of Nataraja by our rural artisans with their charismatic skills. The essence of this beautiful and magnificent wooden statue of Lord Shiva in Nataraja form will not only enrich the beauty of your prayer room and when placed in living spaces, gives an exotic feeling with its traditional form.
