Description :

Goddess Durga earned the title of Mahishashur Mordini after killing Mahishashur, son of Mahisi(Buffalo). Mahishashur is an evil spirit who pursued his evil ways by shape-shifting. Devi Durga stabbed Mahishashur with her trident at the day of Vijaya Dashami. Vijaya Dashami is celebrate as a victory day over all the negative energy. This epic story has been captured in the form of Dhokra showpiece. Dhokra art is one of the India’s historic art form which is based on the non–ferrous metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique. This type of metal casting or lost wax casting has been used in India for over 4000 years. The charming folk motifs of Dhokra are fashioned from brass and copper based alloys using this old technique. There are two main processes of lost wax casting – solid casting and hollow casting. Hollow casting is the conventional method and it is popular in the eastern part of India. The artisans of Dhokra art are mainly based of Bankura and Bardhaman district of West Bengal.
